City addressing options for area housing needs

The city is looking at a variety of options to come up with a plan to address the housing needs of the Grand Haven community. "We've been working on creating some official housing programs and neighborhood redevelopment plans,' Grand Haven Neighborhood Development Coordinator Char Seise said. Seise said the city has been working for more than a year with Lindsay (Hager) of Hager Consulting in getting to this point.

To come up with a housing plan, consultants have used information from a 2008 Community Needs Assessment, data from the 2010 Census and information from a community input meeting held earlier this year to make their decision.

According to the 2008 assessment, Hager said it was determined that half the residents living in the city of Grand Haven worked in the city, the housing in the northwest quadrant of the city was built in the 1950s and was important to be maintained, and there is a limited supply of senior housing.

Census data from 2010 indicates that home foreclosure still is a problem, Hager said, and the population decreased 6.8 percent in 10 years.
