Girl, 5, killed in lawn mower accident

A Kent County parent operating a riding lawn mower ran over and killed their 5-year-old daughter on Tuesday. It happened around 7 p.m. on Marsh Creek Road near Sand Lake in Solon Township. "A very tragic accident,' said Lt. Jeff McAlary of the Kent County Sheriff's Department. From the seat of the riding lawn mower, the parent cutting the grass did not see the 5-year-old in the lawn, according to investigators.

“It appears she was playing,” Lt. McAlary said. “They were riding a mid-sized riding lawn mower. They did not see the child, and either rolled forward or backward.”

An ambulance and helicopter were dispatched to bring the girl to the hospital, but her injuries were so massive she died almost immediately.

“Because of the condition of the girl, there is no way it would be beneficial to transport her,” McAlary said.

Relatives and friends gathered at the house on Marsh Creek Road to try to console the parents over the death of the girl. On Tuesday night, her mother was taken by ambulance to the hospital to get help and treatment for her grief.

“They are so distraught, so beside themselves, it’s very difficult to even communicate with them,” McAlary said.
