Toddler hurt in fall from first-story window

A 14-month-old boy suffered what police believed to be minor injuries after falling through a window onto a cement driveway late Monday morning, said Lt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. The child was on a piece of furniture at a Jeffery Street home in the Crockery Mobile Home Park, 13251 State Road, Bennett said, when he pushed through the screen of the window about 11:30 a.m.

Bennett said the boy’s mother witnessed the fall and rushed to the child — who she said got up, cried a little bit, but otherwise seemed OK. The mother called 911 a couple of hours later when she observed the child was no longer behaving normally, Bennett said.

When emergency personnel arrived on the scene after the 2 p.m. call, they found the boy conscious and alert, with a small bump on his forehead and a bruise above his right eye, Bennett said.

The child was taken by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital. The boy was treated and released, a hospital official said this morning.

Bennett said that no criminal charges were expected, but that a report would be shared with Child Protective Services — “mostly as a matter of routine.”
