Two hurt in Port Sheldon Township crash

Two Robinson Township residents were taken to Holland Hospital following a two-car accident early Saturday evening at the intersection of Port Sheldon Road and 144th Avenue, said Sgt. Keith Garvelink of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Diana Barriga and Cesar Barrios, both 54, were hospitalized in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, Garvelink said.

Barriga was driving her vehicle south on 144th Avenue at about 6 p.m. Saturday. She stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Port Sheldon Road, then proceeded into the path of a vehicle driven by Todd Rhonda, 35, of Hamilton, Garvelink said. Rhonda was pulling a trailer carrying a 25-foot boat.

“(Barriga) mistakenly thought it was a four-way stop,” Garvelink said.

Barriga and her passenger, Barrios, were taken by ambulance to the hospital. Rhonda and two passengers in his vehicle were not injured, police said.
All of the people in the two vehicles were wearing seat belts.

Port Sheldon Road was closed for an hour and a half while the crash was investigated and cleaned up, Garvelink said.
