Bucs’ defensive effort clips Eagles

Grand Haven used a dominating defensive performance and another explosive offensive showing to overwhelm Hudsonville on Friday, 28-6. The Buccaneers held the bruising Eagles' running attack to just 85 yards on 33 carries. On offense, Bucs' quarterback Scott Staal continued his outstanding senior season, completing 15-of-22 passes for 262 yards and three scores. Staal hooked up with his favorite target, Danny Cotter, six times for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

Senior Dakota Smith also accounted for a pair of scores. He rushed one in from 4 yards out in the first quarter, making it 7-0 Grand Haven. He also had a 10-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter to make it 28-6.

Bucs’ linebacker Tanner Jacobs made seven tackles while Dakota Sualeone, playing in his first game of the season, was a force on the defensive line, making 5.5 stops. Torrey Appel also had 5.5 tackles from his defensive line position.

With the victory, Grand Haven is now 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in O-K Red Conference play. The Bucs remain one game behind first-place Rockford, which beat Muskegon on Friday, 29-26.
