4th Island Produce Giveaway is Oct. 8 on Harbor Island

Don Armstrong will be trying to give away more than 50 tons of fruits and vegetables next week. What the Grand Haven man is calling the Fourth Island Produce Giveaway is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8. Armstrong is president of Armstrong Potatoes LLC. He and his wife, Vera, have orchestrated the public produce giveaways in Grand Haven for the past three falls. "Why? We just like to feed people who need food,' Don said.

The Armstrongs said they’ve arranged to truck in about 43,000 pounds of potatoes from Ohio, about 40,000 pounds of cabbage and pumpkins from Illinois, and approximately 23,000 pounds of apples from the Apple Ridge plant north of Grand Rapids to Harbor Island for the event. In addition, they will be stocking trunks with 10,000 cans of vegetables and chicken-and-noodle soup.

They filled about 700 vehicles with a total of about 100,000 pounds of produce each of the past two years. They gave away about 70,000 pounds in the first giveaway in September 2008.

The process will be the same as last year. Members of the Grand Haven Eagles Aerie 925 will be directing traffic from Coho Drive on Harbor Island north toward the island’s boat launch, looping around with trunks open for more volunteers to fill the passing vehicles with the produce.
