Spring Lake, ranked No. 3 in Division 2, improves to 14-1 on the season. The Lakers will host Ludington, a 4-0 winner over Fremont, in Wednesday’s semifinal round of the league tournament.

“We’re still trying to work hard and play at a high level,” Lakers’ coach Jeremy Thelen said.

Before Monday’s game, the Lakers honored their six seniors: Harry Kriger, Zietlow, Berg, Alec Strahl, Platz and Kyle Kendall. That group has been a part of a Spring Lake program that has now won 28 consecutive conference games over the past three seasons.

At Fruitport, the Trojans had a tough time scoring against a defensive-minded Newaygo team, settling for a 2-0 victory.

“We dominated the game, but Newyago really played great team defense,” Trojans’ coach Greg Kobylak said. “That made it at times a bit frustrating for us, but we found a way to get two goals.”

Zach Gilson scored both of the Trojans’ goals. The first, with 5:35 remaining in the first half, was a header off an assist from Taylor McLaughlin.

Gilson’s second goal, with 15:45 remaining in the game, came off an assist from Dalton Mullennix.

Fruitport’s defense — particularly McLaughlin, Ryan Mason and Zach Boroff — was outstanding, according to Kobylak.

Fruitport, the third seed in the league tournament, are now 11-3-1 overall and will play at second-seeded Orchard View at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Junior Varsity: Spring Lake and Whitehall played to a 1-1 tie. Adam Roff scored the Lakers’ goal.
