ArtWalk winners to be announced today

Thousands of people have viewed the Grand Haven ArtWalk 2011 entries and cast ballots during the past two weeks, event organizers said Tuesday. Voting for the second annual art contest officially closed at noon today. ArtWalk organizers will tally the public's preferences and a third-party accounting firm will verify the results. The winning paintings, sculptures, drawings/mixed media artworks and photographs will be revealed to the public late this afternoon.

“We will announce the first- and second-place artists in each category at 5 p.m. at ArtWalk headquarters,” ArtWalk organizer Steve Loftis said. “There will be $6,500 in prizes handed out this year — part of a generous donation made by Betten Auto Group. We are very eager to learn which ArtWalk 2011 pieces were the public’s favorites.”

The event’s headquarters are at the corner of Fifth Street and Columbus Avenue.

After the winners are announced, artists, venues, sponsors and volunteers will celebrate at a private reception at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum.

All day today and during the closing reception, there will be a silent “Rocket Fish” and “Minnow” auction involving a handful of fish sculptures donated to Grand Haven ArtWalk. All proceeds from the auction will go to ArtWalk.

“All the people involved with ArtWalk 2011 have worked hard to make it a huge success,” said Dana Kollewehr, executive director of the Grand Haven Main Street Downtown Development Authority, the organization that hosts ArtWalk. “This closing reception is the perfect way to say thanks to everyone who played such vital roles in the competition, activities and events this year.”

People can still visit all the venues to see the art until Saturday. And, as in last year’s inaugural event, some pieces will likely become permanent fixtures in the businesses and community buildings.
