Fallen Heroes Memorial dedication moved to Dec. 7

The dedication of the Fallen Heroes Memorial has been moved to Dec. 7 - Pearl Harbor Day. Retired U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Kenneth Kelly, co-chairman of the fundraising effort to place the memorial at Grand Haven's Central Park, said the committee felt it more appropriate to have the ceremony on Pearl Harbor Day.

The dedication had been scheduled for Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Kelly will also be the keynote speaker instead of U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland, who has a previous commitment. The committee is also planning a formal ceremony involving veterans and their families.

Kelly said the memorial committee is very close to its goal of raising $130,000 for the monument that will honor soldiers killed during World War II and wars that followed. He said the monument has been ordered and is expected to be delivered in time for the Dec. 7 ceremony.

Kelly said the committee still has 4-by-8-inch bricks available for a $100 donation and 8-by-8-inch bricks for a $1,000 donation. Forms are available at the American Legion Charles Conklin Post 28, 700 Harbor Ave.
