The Grand Haven Township Board is holding a public hearing at its meeting for the request to rezone 25 acres from planned unit development to agricultural. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Township Hall, 13300 168th Ave.

Jason Bergeron said his wife, Jennifer McVoy, has been showcasing horses since she was 8 years old and exhibits them regularly at national horse competitions.
The Park Township couple currently owns five horses, and said they would like to raise them and five more on 25 acres they are seeking to purchase on 152nd Avenue in Grand Haven Township.

Bergeron explained that he and his wife plan to house 10 horses, as well as build a home on the property — which is just south of the Hunter’s Woods subdivision. The sale of the property is contingent on the rezoning, he said.

The horse farm would not be a commercial business, Bergeron said; it would be used for coaching or for therapy with children and families.

The Township Board on Oct. 24 unanimously tabled a request by Bergeron and McVoy to rezone the parcel after hearing from the president of a nearby home association on concerns of odor and possible noise.

The parcel abuts the Hunter’s Woods subdivision, but there is a buffer of about 50 feet between the two properties, according to Township Manager Bill Cargo.

Besides the subdivision, the property proposed for rezoning is surrounded by agricultural to the west, rural residential to the south and vacant residential property owned by the Grand Haven Area Public Schools District to the east.
