Todd Michael Stark, 34, was issued a citation for careless driving, said Officer Mike Williams of the Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Department.

“The results from the (Michigan State Police) Motor Carrier investigation concluded that the brakes on the garbage truck were in working order and no mechanical issues were discovered,” Williams said.

Stark was driving an Allied Waste garbage truck south on U.S. 31 just before 10 a.m. Monday, when he took the Ferrysburg exit, was unable to stop at the stop sign at the bottom of the short ramp, and hit an SUV driven by a Spring Lake woman. The vehicles slid off the south side of the road, and the garbage truck took down a railroad crossing gate and a utility pole in the process.

About 17 customers in the area were without power for about four hours until the pole could be replaced, the Board of Light & Power said.

The driver of the Chevrolet Trail Blazer — Donna Hasenbank, 59 — was taken by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, according to Williams.

Hasenbank, who is recovering at home today, said she is “just a little sore.” She said she suffered bruising to the ribs, lower back and elbow.
