Driver falls asleep, causes fatal crash

Police in Allegan County said a driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed head-on into vehicle carrying two people getting ready to deliver newspapers, killing a 26-year-old man.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Department said the crash happened about 2 a.m. today in Fillmore Township, south of Holland.

Police said the 25-year-old Fennville-area man was heading home from work at the time of the crash and told investigators he fell asleep.

The 26-year-old driver of the other vehicle died and a 17-year-old rear passenger in that vehicle was injured. Police said they were from the Plainwell area.

Names weren’t immediately released. The 25-year-old and 17-year-old were taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.

The crash was under investigation.
