Traffic stalled for miles

Traffic on Beacon Boulevard slowed to a crawl and then a stop this afternoon because of a malfunction with the crossing arm on the drawbridge.

The southbound lane opened, but the northbound lane remained closed for at least 20 minutes while commuters tried to get home for the day. Northbound traffic at one point was backed up all the way to Ferris Street.

As of 3:50 p.m., the northbound lane was starting to move as workers locked the crossing arm back into place.
