LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Not all dog owners are irresponsible

Apr 13, 2012

Mr. Harris, I respectfully state that banishing dogs from an area is not the answer. It will never happen because dogs are becoming more of people’s lives than they ever have been. Communities that don’t welcome dogs are not where the future lies.

I agree that people need to be courteous of others who may not take pleasure in dogs like a lot of us do, and even to those of us who do. Sometimes, we do not get to choose when our pets need to “powder their noses” — but it seems in this case, the person didn’t even try to move the dog to a more appropriate place. Sometimes, in moving the dog, one can make an even bigger mess. I agree that some people may need to be more aware of their dog(s) and the people around them.

But I feel that the appropriate way for you to direct your frustration is at the person committing the act because you’ve grouped all dog owners in the same “irresponsible” category, and that is wrong. Maybe next time you see something like this happening, take a deep breath and collect your intelligent thoughts and express them. They may not openly accept your suggestion. They may even get angry; but if you’re calm and collected, at least you’ve done what you can and have been heard. They may think twice before doing the same thing next time.

No One Special

I dont't know what Mr. Harris wrote, but I do know that my experience with dog owners as a group has been completely negative. I have experienced too many dog owners who leave their dog's messes in our yard and on the boardwalk, allow their dogs to roam without leashes and take them to the beach areas even though they're not allowed. And when I calmly and cooly ask them to keep their dogs away from me they become belligerent and angry. This is the vast majority of dog owners...not a small minority.

Well put Tonya. I couldn't agree with you more. We too are responsible dog owners and appreciate you going to bat for us.

I can see that "No One Special" certainly lives up to his/her name! What a gross generalization!
Lots of parents let their kids run around and bother other people, so does that make ALL parents irresponsible? Get fair - and get a grip!
