The University of Michigan took the overall mens' points while GVSU took the overall womens' race with enough points to make the difference in the overall team standings.
GVSU took out the U of M men's varsity eight in a close race held on a slightly choppy Spring Lake.
"Our men just beat Michigan," said GVSU Coach John Bancheri. "That the first time in my career at GVSU."
Bancheri said the U-M men's team was the favorite coming into the regatta. "But our guys trained hard this year. They're focused. The training has resulted in this win.
Eight university teams and four high school teams participated in the event under cool, breezy conditions, but not the storms which were forecast earlier in the week.
"We did luck out with the weather," Bancheri said. "This venue — even at its worst — you can still come out with a decent regatta.
