LAKERS ROLL OVER VIKINGS
Spring Lake led just 2-0 at halftime, but averaged a goal every three minutes in the second half and mercied Tri-County on Monday, 8-0.
A pair of freshmen — Marida Gezon and Megan Harken — scored in the opening half for Spring Lake, which was playing against a strong wind. The goal was the first of Gezon’s varsity career.
After halftime, with the wind at their backs, Spring Lake’s offense came alive. Molly Miedema took advantage of a short punt by the Vikings’ goalie and looped a shot back in over the keeper and into the net to make it 3-0. After an own-goal by Tri-County — set up by a long throw-in by the Lakers’ Ayna Gordon — Spring Lake received goals from Brooke TenBrink, Emily Walling, Kelsey Kippe and Harken.
The Lakers, an honorable mention in the newest Division 2 state rankings, are now 5-1-1 overall and 3-0 into league play. They’ll take on another ranked team — Rockford, an honorable mention in the Division 1 poll — tonight at Rockford.
Junior Varsity: Spring Lake scored an 8-0 win over Tri-County, with Sierra Gipson recording a hat trick. Maya Denslow, Becca Boven, Kelcia Wilson and Kelly Hoffius also scored goals.
