Brake fire backs up traffic on U.S. 31 ramp

Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 3 p.m. Ferrysburg Fire Chief Mike Olthof said the driver was having trouble with his brakes, stopped at the bottom of the ramp and saw that his brakes were on fire.

“He was keeping it in check with an extinguisher until we could put water on it,” Olthof said.

The man was able to drive the truck off the ramp and park it until a tow truck arrived.

Damage was contained to the truck's brakes and brake lines.
