However, the one thing that makes her different has brought the community to her side and demonstrated just how supportive neighbors can be.
The Fruitport Eagles will host a fundraiser on Saturday for Brook to help her in her fight against diabetes. The money will be used to get Brook an expertly trained service dog. This dog will help her maintain safe blood sugar levels, as well as providing some freedom.
At age 5, Brook was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The Fruitport girl has since had to go on an insulin tube in order to maintain her blood sugar levels. She also has to be tested every day at 2 a.m. by her father in order to ensure she doesn’t have seizures while she sleeps.
Brook said that she is most excited for the effect the dog will have on her ability to be just like everyone else. She said she looks forward to being able to go to friends’ houses and the mall without parental supervision.
The dog will also be specially trained to notify Brook or her family if she has low blood sugar, simply by smell.
Brook said she is hoping for a German shepherd for a companion. She also said that she isn’t sure on a name yet.
