Mall security called police at around 4 p.m. Friday when they found two children, ages 2 and 5, had been left alone in the play area inside the mall. Police and mall security attempted to locate the adults responsible for the children for about an hour, said Sgt. Bruce Morningstar of the Fruitport Township Police.

Contact was eventually made with a 21-year-old woman at the mall, Morningstar said. The Muskegon-area woman indicated she was the mother of one of the children. The other child was the woman’s sibling.

The woman told police she had been shopping in the mall while the children were left in the play area.

“The concern is, it may be a safe place for kids to play — but at this age, someone could come along and grab them, and nobody would know it,” Morningstar said. “And if a child got hurt, no one is there to authorize treatment."

The case has been referred to Children's Protective Services and the Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office.
