"Some time ago the station closed. Then, a couple of months ago, a new "Star" sign was put up and the gas pumps were rebranded with a star logo. Then, last night, when I was driving by, I noticed the lights were on the pumps. But the station still looks as if it is far from opening."
We first asked City Planner Kristin Turkelson, who said she wasn't sure what was going on at that site.
"I know someone bought it and has been slowly fixing it up to open back up a gas station," she said. "Not sure where he is in the process."
We did a property search and discovered the owner is Blarney Castle Oil Co. of Bear Lake. Blarney Castle also owns and operates the EZ Mart stores and gas stations in Michigan (nearly 100 of them, according to the company's web site). There are EZ Mart stores with Mobil gas in Grand Haven and Ferrysburg, and one that's a Marathon station in Nunica. Most Blarney Castles are BP stations.
Dennis McCarthy of Blarney Castle told us this about the former Clark station in Grand Haven: "We have rented that site to a gentleman who plans to open it as a gas station/convenience store. He's been slow to get it open and I'm not sure when it is slated to open at this point."
Thanks, Dennis. So, look for it to reopen sometime soon as a gas station and store. Not sure what the Blue Star logo is for, since there doesn't seem to be a gas with that brand around these parts. There is a Blue Star Gas propane company based in California.
