The event is 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 23, at the Grand Haven City Beach. It is presented by the local Chamber of Commerce.

The contest's coordinator, Courtney Geurink, encourages families, friends, individuals and co-workers to show off their sand-sculpting skills to compete for the top prize in six categories.

“Even if you aren’t the competitive type, it still is fun to create something from the sand with your friends or just watch elephants, cars, flying pigs, and other items appear along the shoreline,” she said. “Families and friends have made Sand Sculpture Contest a tradition, coming back year after year. The memories that have been made at this event are endless. We want to keep encouraging people to come share our sandbox.”

Applications may be found printed in the Grand Haven Tribune, from the Chamber office at 1 S. Harbor Ave., online at facebook.com/sandsculpturecontest, or by e-mailing cgeurink@grandhavenchamber.org. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the information tent at City Beach, and registration fees range from $10 to $25.

Participants are given a two-hour time block from 10 a.m. to noon to sculpt the sand without any artificial supports. Judges will consider theme, originality and difficulty and award first- through third-place medals in each of the six categories shortly after the scores have been tallied.

Spectators will have the opportunity to cast their vote for the People’s Choice Award.
