Snyder orders flags lowered for Van Regenmorter

Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered that U.S. flags in Michigan fly at half-staff on Thursday in honor of former state Sen. William Van Regenmorter, who died Monday at 73.

A memorial service for the former state lawmaker from Ottawa County's Georgetown Township is at 11 a.m. Friday at the Baldwin Street Christian Reformed Church in Jenison.

Van Regenmorter served three terms in the state Senate and six terms in the state House. He is best known for drafting Michigan's Crime Victim's Rights Act of 1985.

Snyder said the lawmaker worked "tirelessly ... for the people of Michigan, and his many contributions will not be forgotten."
