LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Biblical guidance requested

Jun 26, 2012

With that in mind, I would also appreciate his guidance on several other biblical rules.

Leviticus 25:44 says I can possess slaves purchased from neighboring nations. Does that mean both countries or only one? How do I go about making these purchases?

According to Exodus 21:7, a father may sell his daughter into slavery. Does the daughter need to be of a certain age before the sale can take place or can it happen anytime? What is the going rate for daughters these days?

People who work on the Sabbath are to be put to death (Exodus 35:2). Who is responsible for killing police officers, firefighters, EMTs, doctors, nurses and others who work on the Sabbath?

Leviticus 19:27 says men should not trim their hair or beards. What is the proper punishment when they do?

People who wear clothing of blended fabrics are breaking the law set forth in Leviticus 19:19. What is the punishment for that?

Disobedient children are to be stoned (Deuteronomy 21:18-21). Is stoning to be employed right away or is there a kind of three-strikes-and-you’re-out rule? For example, could the child be whipped for the first offense, water-boarded for the second, and then stoned to death for the third?

Thank you.

Old Testament/Torah Moses quotes.

Meh.

Since the judgement and condemnation comes from professed (lowercase c) christians, I'd be more interested in discussing the New Testament quotes where Jesus decides which ancient laws to play forward vs. which to abandon.

the bible after all was really written by men who chose what to include or not according to the cultural attitudes prevailing in their era...we have progressed way beyond that period in history and the most important thing of eternal significance in the bible is the love of god for all man (and woman) kind, which includes everyone regardless of his/her sexual orientation. wasn't that jesus message in the new testament and wasn't that why he associated with sinners - harlots, prostitutes, thiefs, and yes probably even homosexuals, maybe because they understood and realized that the love of God was available to them, perhaps unlike the moneychangers in the temples - who may also have realized it but didn't extend that love to others??? ethics is not about following the rules of a society but about helping and loving our neighbors and those in need...

Awesome observations neighbor...I would go for the three strike rule for most children.
