Curbing the floating party

Boaters blaring music, dropping anchor and tethering together near Smith's Bridge in Ferrysburg is causing headaches for some who live on Smith's Bayou.

Spring Lake resident Terry Grotemat said it's often a challenge to maneuver between other boaters and swimmers near Smith’s Bridge.

“Patrols would be fine if they told them to move,” he said at last week’s Ferrysburg City Council meeting.

Grotemat said he would like to see a buoyed channel established for boats to remain out of the way.

Ferrysburg Councilwoman Rebecca Hopp said “unspeakable things” happen on the boats.

Although the area is congested, there’s nothing illegal about it, said Lt. Lee Hoeksema of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.

Hoeksema said the most common complaints from that area are about the noise, but that’s something the Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Department enforces. The Sheriff's Department marine patrol monitors the area to enforce marine laws — such as operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs, underage drinking, and reckless boating — Hoeksema explained.

Another area patrolled for noise complaints off Spring Lake is Stahl’s Bayou, commonly known as Hanky Pank Bayou, Hoeksema said. As music blares, some boaters walk boat to boat, which presents the danger of falling over and potential drowning.

First off I would say there is enough for the police to do as it is. And I think they have harassed the average boaters enough. A boat can't head towards Lake Michigan without get pull over and questioned. This happens enough that the police boats do not have time for anything else.
Second, without boater being able to tie together in circles they would not be able to create a Very Safe area for their children to swim in.
Third, these circle are no different than stopping at any picnic area on a beach. Does Rebecca Hopp going to stop us talking next. Perhaps the get together's should be recorded to enable her to determine if the conversations are up to her standards? After all her and her cronies apparently are very familiar with what goes on during these gatherings! Yes? Rebecca Hopp stated just so above, did she not? Make me wonder just what it was she was doing? (Any pictures available?)
Fourth. There are, I am proud to say, freedom of Rights to consider. Just how much more do these people want. As am American I just so willing to have my Rights stomped on. It seem every time a group of people gather someone wants to stop it. Just what do you think these boaters are doing? Over throwing the government?
In a word or two. I've have never seen or Done, in a boat gathering, anything I'm a shame of that I haven't done on shore. I have and will continue to allow My Daughter to attend, organize and start up boat gathering. And if Rebecca Hopp is so Ashamed of whatever it is she did, then send me the pictures, and leave the rest of us ALONE
