Odd Side not ailing

“We outgrew it last year,” Odd Side Ales owner Chris Michner said of his current production space at Harbourfront Place, 41 Washington Ave.

Michner sought additional space to make the brewery's unique combinations of beer that range from Citra Pale Ale to Grapefruit Wheat. The brewery even has root beer on tap.

“It is going to help out a lot,” Michner said of the additional space. “Right now, we have five beers on tap when we should have 15.”

Now that summer is here, so are the season's crowds and Michner said he's working hard to keep up with the demand.

“It’s non-stop brewing right now,” he said.

Michner said the company has entered beer events across the state, where his product has received accolades.

Mayor Geri McCaleb said she was happy to see the brewery's success and need for expansion. She called his story of starting off small and growing big “fascinating."

Michner worked in accounting before opening Odd Side Ales in 2010. As a student at Michigan State University, Michner would brew as a hobby. He even wrote a column for the student newspaper, The State News, on brewing beer.

Michner will be moving the bulk of his beer production to a facility at 1811 Hayes St., near the Grand Haven Memorial Airport and industrial park. He said he looked at several locations before coming to a decision on the Hayes Street location.

Although the bulk of production will be moving, there will still be some done at the downtown location. The serving spot will remain at Harbourfront Place.
