County fair time

Dylan Percival sat in the straw as a calf pressed up against him, nudging his arm for attention. "I just love cows,' the 11-year-old Bloomingdale resident said.

Percival was at the Ottawa County Fair, which kicked off Monday and runs through Saturday at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds on Holland's north side.

Percival said he’s been around animals since he was little. Despite sometimes being bullied by the large animals, he still enjoys their company.

Throughout the week, visitors to the fair can enjoy 4-H shows and auctions, a petting zoo, a carnival, and events in the grandstand.

Ottawa County Fair President Jeff Myaard said some of this year’s new features include different rides at the Big Rock Amusement Midway and a full rodeo event with bull riding, barrel racing and calf roping.

Myaard said the fair is a family-focused event.

“This is probably one of the most family-affordable events you can come to,” he said.

Holland resident Carissa Tracy, a member of the Hilltop Gang 4-H Club, received first place for showing a market goat during the 4-H Livestock Program Market Goat Show on Monday.

“It was really exciting and a surprise, too,” she said.

Karen DeJonge of Coopersville and her daughters walked through the barns on Monday, taking pictures of the goats and cows. DeJonge said they attended the fair to watch one of her daughters participate in the 4-H Livestock Program Lamb Show.

Kellie Smallegan bent down to pet month-old goats before taking to the stage. The Holland-area resident is also a member of the Hilltop Gang. She shows hogs, feeder calves, horses and goats.

“I like the animals because it’s fun and you form a bond with others who show,” she said.

Holland resident Elizabeth Machiele and her four children attended at the fair to watch her husband and brother participate in the 4-H Livestock Program Feeder Calf Show.

“They like to get right in there,” she said about her children being around the animals.
