The 78-year-old victim was in the produce area and had turned away from her cart briefly to look for something, said Sgt. Bruce Morningstar of the Fruitport Township Police Department.
A 32-year-old Muskegon County woman reportedly approached the cart, took the woman’s purse from the cart and started toward the exit, Morningstar said.
“The victim was unaware of the offender’s actions, but a nearby Good Samaritan witnessed the theft,” the sergeant said. “The witness yelled, notifying others of the theft, and then caught up to the suspect and removed the victim’s purse.”
The suspect got into a vehicle and left the scene, but witnesses were able to get a description. The suspect was later located and stopped by Whitehall police.
Morningstar said the suspect was turned over to Fruitport police and was lodged in the Muskegon County Jail.
Police said the names of the victim and the suspect were not being released at this time.
