The 23-year-old man was located about five minutes after arriving on the scene, walking up the beach, said Lt. Matt Schweitzer of Grand Haven Township Fire/Rescue.
Dive teams and the Coast Guard were responding along with the firefighters and Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, but were canceled when the man was found safe, Shweitzer said.
It turned out that the caller mistook the swimmer’s waving in the water as a sign of distress and called 911, he said.
Schweitzer said there was a rip current warning on Sunday and there were at least 100 people at the neighborhood beach.
Everyone is urged to use caution when these conditions occur, he said.
Conditions at the Grand Haven State Park this morning were green flag and water temperature of 70 degrees.
