Midway through the second round of matches, he felt it was neck-and-neck between the Bucs and Petoskey.

Unfortunately, Grand Haven couldn’t hold off the Northmen, as Petoskey captured first place at the event by a single point over the hosts, 15-14. Spring Lake was also in contention until the very end, but settled for third with 11 points. Mona Shores rounded out the field with eight points.

Petoskey fielded three flight championships, coming all in singles play — No. 2, 3 and 4.

Grand Haven’s doubles teams provided the Bucs with some big points, as Craig Peplinski and Finn Heins took the title at No. 2 doubles with a 3-0 record and Adam Carlisle and Reid Murphy were also undefeated at No. 3.

Spring Lake’s lone flight championship came at No. 4, where senior Jonah Yoshonis and freshman Griffin Wagasky completed an undefeated 3-0 day.

In the head-to-head showdowns between Grand Haven and Spring Lake’s singles players, the Lakers Ryan Fedewa bested Korey Searle at No. 1, to help the Lakers’ junior to his only victory.

At No. 2, Spring Lake’s Stuart Velarde defeated Grand Haven’s DJ Thielbar. But Grand Haven’s Varun Biddanda won his match over Spring Lake freshmen Kasey Panyard at No. 3, as did the Bucs’ Jeff Stevens at No. 4, over Spring Lake’s Craig Pratt.

TROJANS FALL TO MCC

Fruitport gave Muskegon Catholic Central a run for its money before falling short in a 6-1 loss to the Crusaders.

The Trojans’ lone win came at No. 1 singles, where Alex Bowen scored an impressive win over Josh Parra, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Both teams voided at No. 4 doubles.

“We had close matches at No. 3 singles, at 1 and 2 doubles,” said Fruitport coach Brad Busscher. “This could have swung either way.”

The loss is the first of the season for Fruitport.
