OUR VIEWS: Skateboard regulations needed

Aug 28, 2012

City ordinances say skateboarders and bicyclists are to use the streets and not the sidewalks in the downtown area. This works OK most of the time, but operators must use common sense when the Coast Guard Festival carnival and other popular events come to town and create congestion.

However, the boardwalk is a different situation. People packing the boardwalk during the summer months and skateboarders and bicyclists are not a good mix. It’s an accident waiting to happen.

The city ordinance encourages bicyclists and those on Rollerblades to be cautious and to give the right of way to pedestrians using the boardwalk. The ordinances say no skateboards are allowed on the boardwalk, but this isn’t strictly enforced unless there are complaints. In fact, there are no signs saying “Skateboards not allowed.”

We believe that all “wheels” should be prohibited from the boardwalk during certain times of the day during the summer months, when boardwalk traffic is at its busiest.

We realize public safety officers have more important things to do than patrol the boardwalk — but occasional patrols, a few signs and the occasional ticket would send a message.
There is a season for everything, and the busy summer season is not a good time to have pedestrians on the boardwalk dodging bikes and skateboards.

The area is blessed with a skate park and countless other places for boarders to enjoy their sport in the summer, and there are miles and miles of bike paths and roads for the bikers. Take advantage of those assets, and leave the boardwalk and busy city streets to those setting a more leisurely pace on foot.

How about banning tourists and then we can ride when and where we like in peace and harmony with our walking neighbors.

while we're at it, let's ban all four legged creatures from the boardwalk also! And those distracting bikinis, let's ban those too. People who smoke or eat while on the boardwalk should be banned. But only from 2-4 am, Tuesdays, Fridays and alternate Sundays between Groundhog Day & Columbus Day.

Dear letsgetreal,

It seems your perception of reality is distorted.  Local advertising sales is up over last year and continues to show signs of improvement.  Single copy sales is continously 15 - 17% up over last year.  Did I mention that our pageviews on grandhaventribune.com topped 1,000,000 for the month in July generated by over 70,000+ unique visitors - both all time highs?  I can assure you that the Tribune is not on its way out! Thanks for reading.

Let me get this straight - you are criticizing me for criticizing others? Who appointed you Queen to make such judgments? I've had more positive reactions than negative ones, so maybe I'm actually adding to the experience here. And you say you like the stories more now than before. That's great, however, that means you prefer stories that create controversy. So why complain when someone strongly states their opinions to a controversial story? Just because they're different than yours?

And you tell me not to make fun of people with typos. Why not? I'm sick and tired of reading comments by people trying to make a valid point while using grammar and punctuation worse than many elementary school students! If you want your point and be taken seriously then you should write with at least a reasonable effort. I make errors just like everyone else, but when people are just plain lazy about it I get irritated.

I don't like ignorance masked as intellect. I don't like bullies masked as prophets. I don't like opinions masked as fact. All these things are detestable to me, and I will not be silent when I see them.

If my comments bother you then either engage me in discussing the actual issues at hand, or move along. But judging me for judging others is just hypocritical and a waste of time, energy, and space on your precious news site. If I am wrong about an issue and someone engages in a way that is more reasonable than my previous opinion I will change my mind and admit I was wrong, and even apologize if necessary as I know I can be harsh at times (I actually do try not to be more than I need to be believe it or not). I apologized and changed my mind on issues on this site more than once. What a horrible judgment to say I have a hard soul. Those who know me would totally disagree. What kind of heart does it take to make such a rash and condescending judgment? Perhaps those prayers should be to see the hardness of your own soul if it is there.

I know I can be overbearing at times, and for that I genuinely am sorry. It's not my intent. I'm also not trying to stir the pot or hijack the comment section. In my heart I want what's best for our community because I do love it. Sorry for the ways I fail, and specifically to those I offend or annoy, in the process of 100% sincerely trying to stand up for what I believe is right,

Grammysue on here for 3 days and already calling Zeke out! Love ♥ it! 'Hard soul"? Good thing you are religious and not judgmental at all. "prattle" = 50 something? Please... don't anyone else have an opinion on here that might rattle her cage!

Maybe the issue is common sense. Skateboard in the street you get hurt or killed common sense. Go off the grass and inside the dirt ring where the big mean dog is chained and get bit. common sense i think someone has banned common sense because there is no natural justice anymore.
