Kyle Bruursema, 17, ran his pickup truck off the road and into a utility pole on 104th Avenue south of VanBuren Street at about 11 a.m., police said.

The teen had just left the Ottawa Area Technical Center in a group of several cars and was on his way back to Zeeland West High School, said Lt. Steve Kempker of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.

Bruursema was driving south on 104th Avenue when his 1996 GMC Sonoma went off the road near Barry Street, Kempker said. The youth overcorrected, went off the other side of the road, hit a power pole and rolled several times.

He was extricated from his truck by Olive Township firefighters, and then was flown by medical helicopter to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Kempker said.

Bruursema was wearing a seatbelt at the time. Speed was determined to be a factor in the crash, Kempker said.

A hospital spokeswoman said that as of 11 a.m. Thursday, the teen remained listed in critical condition.
