Eli VanderVelde and Chaise Schuiteman each had two goals for the Warriors while Tyler Cook, Alex Rop, Jeff Binnendyk and Rob Hallenbeck also scored. Matt VanderPloeg and Schuiteman each had assists.

WMC had 16 shots on goal compared with 5 for Burt Lake. WMC keepers Jacob Berens and Christian Roger had one and four saves, respectively.

“After being shut out and shut down by Mona last night, this was a key game for us,” WMC coach David Hulings said. “Burt Lake came in ranked and ready to play but we were able to come out with an outstanding amount of intensity despite playing last night. The captains — Josh (Binnendyk), Al (Breit) and Noah (Wildeman) — lead this team onto the field and with their play. They were inspired, but also corrected the things we were so poor at last night.

“We got goals from young players tonight, as well. We challenged the young players to step it up and play as though they really were on the varsity team. It showed tonight. They matched the intensity and great play of the upper classmen.”

Burt Lake features high-scoring Aaron Chatfield, who came into the game with an astounding 27 goals already this fall.

“We didn’t mark him, but we wanted our guys to communicate and hand him off,” WMC coach David Hulings said. “He could beat five guys, but we had a sixth guy there.”

Chatfield scored a goal in every game last season until the Warriors blanked him in the Division 4 regional finals. He had scored a goal in each of Burt Lake’s seven games this season, including eight in a game against Roscommon.
