MAILBAG: Where is city's south lakeshore border?

Bill of Grand Haven asked, "I think it would interest local readers to know where the city beach spans."

d type MAILBAG in the subject line. Or mail it the old-fashioned way to: Grand Haven Tribune, MAILBAG, 101 N. Third St., Grand Haven, MI 49417. We'll do our best to get you an answer! A new Mailbag appears on at 5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Tri-cities realist

Hmm... I thought that area was owned by the Highland Park Association. Mark Brooky, can you look into whether that is true or not? Or perhaps the Association had an ownership or lease agreement from the city that expired or was transferred? Perhaps I'm wrong on this one, but I thought this area was not city owned, which is why from my understanding, adult beverages could be legally consumed here, as opposed to the state park and adjacent "city" beach. Has something changed in the last 20 or so years?

According to the Ottawa county GIS map, the "Michigan Park" beach in question, which was stated to start from Doris and end at Robbins road is in Grand Haven Township, not in the City of Grand Haven . Also, the lake shore homes in this area pay taxes to Grand Haven Township. It appears that Grand Haven City should review the mapping details with Ottawa county and discuss with the Township. So the question now is did the City of Grand Haven annex property from the township of Grand Haven without their and the private property owners knowledge? Also, I do know that the property owners have been taxed on the "Michigan Park" beach as private beach front property and that the beach has recently (last 8 years) reappeared after being submerged for 50 years. Maybe the township of Grand haven should pay back taxes to the beach front owners if this land is considered public. Many questions!
