The Bucs couldn’t claim the tournament title, however, as they were ousted by the No. 1 team in Class B, Forest Hills Eastern, 23-25, 25-18, 15-9.

The Bucs won their pool with victories against Wayland, Vicksburg, and Shelby — each in two game sweeps.

Grand Haven avenged an earlier season loss to Hudsonville by eliminating its O-K Red Conference rivals in the quarterfinals, 25-22, 23-25, 15-8. The Bucs then overpowered Thornapple-Kellogg in two games to reach the finals.

The Bucs will celebrate Senior Night on Thursday, with visiting West Ottawa traveling to Grand Haven High School.

Fruitport has buried the competition through the Lakes Eight Conference recently, but the Trojans found tougher sledding at Saturday’s East Grand Rapids Invitational where they struggled to a 1-3 finish.

The Trojans dropped decision to Forest Hills Central and Battle Creek Lakeview in pool play, but managed a tight three-game win against Grand Rapids Christian.

The Trojans were eliminated from the tournament by Portage Central, 25-14, 25-17.

Senior middle hitter Autumn Winger had five aces, 14 kills, 1.5 blocks and 11 digs for the Trojans.

A total of 24 teams — eight freshman and 16 junior varsity — competed at the Mona Shores JV Invitational on Saturday, including Spring Lake.  The Lakers’ JV squad completed a 1-1-2 record.

Abbi Garrison paced the Lakers with nine kills and 21 digs. Emily Betten had nine aces, Katie Hettenbach totaled 16 assists and Amber Taylor led with three blocks.
