Frankenmuth to respond to cross removal request

A national organization has asked the city of Frankenmuth to take down a 55-foot cross erected in the late 1970s in a public park.

Washington, D.C.-based Americans United for Separation of Church and State first sent a letter to the city in July, seeking the removal of the cross from Cross Park. A response is expected by the end of this week.

The organization said the cross in the park across from Bronner's Christmas Wonderland violates the U.S. Constitution.

The Frankenmuth Parks and Recreation website states the white cross "is a tribute to the religious background of the Frankenmuth community."

Frankenmuth, about 75 miles northwest of Detroit, is represented by the Ann Arbor-based Thomas More Law Center.

How is having this cross in the park hurting anyone? These people make me sick with their "all about me" beliefs. I say they should put it to a local vote and let the local voters decide whether they want this in their park.

I sure hoped you were kidding, unfortunately I'm pretty sure you are not. Please read the US Constitution. In the First Amendment, you will find the part that you may not like, "or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" (in regard to religion). The display of a cross on city property is in no way an "establishment of religion." And I would think that no law was passed in GH to mandate its display. So Constitutionally, your claim has no merit. And after you read the Constitution, you will also find that you are not protected from "being offended." That being said, if I lived in a historically Jewish area, I wouldn't be surprised, and would expect to see the Star of David on display, as a tribute to their historical religious roots. Same can be said for Muslims, Buddhists, etc. If you are really that offended, do yourself a favor, don't look at it, and your problem will be solved.

So tri cities , you are ok with all of the different religions getting to display their cross or symbol on Dewey hill this December. Are you ok with bells ringing every day to remind people to pray? Not all people want to see the symbol of Christianity in their face all day, some would say that it represent discrimination. What will happen to me if I disobey gods law? I go to hell, if I do not believe what your church says I am a sinner. Why should I allow a person to judge me and also put forth a cross to further their religious view?

No worries. I've heard that one of the folks that owns the property across the river from the boardwalk have agreed that, if indeed this does occur, they would gladly display the cross on their property. Good prevails. Evil is always overcome by good. Always.

I'm offended that no one is offended that I take offense to the request to remove the offensive cross! IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT DON'T LOOK AT IT!

Amen! :-)

Right on! We conservatives need to start proclaiming how offended we are, perhaps then people will listen to us, since it seems to work for Liberals. Yeah right, hahaha.

Wingmaster, your comment 'IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT DON'T LOOK AT IT! “ I remember hearing the same thing in the 5th grade... NOT a very good argument you simple minded fool.

Wingmaster

Ah yes, learned many common sense realities early in life. Don't fault me if I don't pay attention to you.

Does that mean we remove all the crosses in a city owned cemetery??? Do we not let the kids have prayer groups on school grounds... What I really don't understand is why we have taken the american flags out of our schools classrooms and also not sighting the pledge of allegiance in our schools. This has become way out of control on the part of left wing liberals... People stand tall and take out country back... If you don't like it.... MOVE

ghmomma

You paid for your cemetary plot, put whatever you want on it, and it's not YOUR country you friggin' nut bar conservatives. It's EVERYONE'S. Keep your childish magical thinking in your churches where it belongs. If you don't like what is being done in the public schools send your kids to a private school that believes the way you do. Good grief, YOU obviously don't like what's going on in this great country so why don't YOU MOVE?

Wingmaster

You bringing up a child with that kind of slanderous, disrespectful tone is what is wrong with country Ma'am.

ghmomma

There is nothing slanderous or disrespectful about my tone. That's just your OPINION about my tone. And I believe YOUR kind are what's wrong with our country.

Wingmaster

I rest my case, you are disrespectful and it shows in your writing. Remember this when you find your children are mouthing back...you have been a good teacher! Good luck.

I'm a grandmother. My kids are grown. All three are Big Ten college grads. Two Masters Degrees. Four grandkids......and I rest my case........YOUR kind are what's wrong with country.

Wingmaster

Enjoy your lonely golden years.

ghmomma

I watch two of my grandchildren four days a week, so thanks, I'll try really hard to be lonely.

Wingmaster

I'm happy for you to be their full time child care. Again, enjoy those golden years!

a cross in the park BAD, obamacare forcing businesses to pay for abortion medicine OK. If they truly want separation of church and state, they better start at the top otherwise I don't want to hear about it!

It surprises me that anyone can be so "offended" by the sight of a cross or the mear mention of "God". It seems these people are so singularly possessed with ensuring that only their own personal views and opinions are honored that they fail to realize what tolerance truly means. Tolerance means accepting others views, beliefs, personalities without exception. It does not mean that all people must follow your idea of what you feel is right or else! In regards to the "separation of church and state" that is quoted above from the 1st amendment, is to be applied to the establishment of government, not the free excercise of religion of which many people such as those afraid of crosses seek to prohibit.

It's always interesting to read the hate that comes from those who choose to believe that we just happened from nothing and that Christianity is some type of magical, fairytale belief system.
Your hate only solidifies even more that good and evil does exist and that evil (hate) always comes out swinging at the good. It must be a sad existence to be driven by such hate. Jesus said, "Love your neighbor and pray for your enemies."
