On Tuesday, Rick’s teammates challenged him to speed things up a bit, and the junior responded.

Rick placed eighth overall with a time of 17 minutes, 51 seconds, and was the first Laker to cross the finish line as Spring Lake placed second, just three points behind Ludington, in their home race.

“He’s been running a little slower at the start of races, so we told him he had to pick it up,” said Lakers’ senior captain Connor Galligan, who was ninth with a time of 17:54. “He caught up to me with 200 (yards) left and I told him, ‘Just go!’”

“With a lot of our guys, we talked about matching yourself up with someone who challenges you, and that’s what the boys did today," said Lakers' coach Greg Brown.

The strategy worked for the Lakers, who finished with 59 points on Tuesday. Ludington, led by a pair of outstanding runners in Luke Johnson (16:25) and Matthew Ritter (17:10), took first place with 56 points.

Tom Kordupel had a strong run for Spring Lake, taking 11th at 18:02. Ryan Galligan was 15th at 19:19, while Will Morrison took 16th at 18:22.

Fruitport placed fourth at Tuesday’s meet with 96 points.

Aaron King took fifth for the Trojans, running an excellent race and crossing the finish line in 17:37. Dominic Flores took 10th at 18:01. Zach Jones placed 12th at 18:08, while Codey Moore was 26th at 19:07.
