Sondra Metzler was delivering newspapers near the intersection of Sheldon Road and Arlington Avenue when she saw a garbage can in the street, said Sgt. Jim Albright of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. When Metzler went into the street to retrieve it, a gust of wind caught the lid of the can and the lid smacked the Grand Haven woman in the head, knocking her to the ground.

Metzler was able to get up and make it to the curb.

Police said a couple of witnesses went out to retrieve the can. During that time, a black van went by and ran over Metzler’s foot as she sat on the curb.

Metzler had a cut on her head, as well as a foot injury, Albright said. She was joking with emergency workers as they loaded her into the ambulance.

The black van involved in the incident did not stop and left the scene, Albright said. Witnesses said it continued south on Sheldon.
