Township to review home zoning rules

Changes may be coming to Grand Haven Township's zoning ordinance that would impact how residents can update their homes and cottages.

Township Manager Bill Cargo said homeowners who want to make improvements to their cottages and homes face issues if the property is no longer conforming to today's building rules.

“We have a lot of cottages that have been here for more than 100 years,” he said.

The proposed new ordinance would require that the lot on which a nonconforming building is located must be unable to meet area and width requirements of the particular zoning district.

“Hopefully, we will be able to reduce the amount of the Zoning Board of Appeals requests that they have,” Cargo said.

The proposed ordinance change also states that after reconstruction or a remodeling project, the nonconforming structure cannot violate the township’s zoning ordinance to a greater extent than it did prior to the work.

“We’re making it clear that it is adding to the life of the nonconforming structure,” Cargo explained.

Township Supervisor Karl French said the Township Board would look at the proposed ordinance for a second reading before it is adopted.

Tri-cities realist

I've re-read this article 3 times, and for the life of me, I cannot understand its intent. "We’re making it clear that it is adding to the life of the nonconforming structure," Did this sentence clarify anything for anyone else? Perhaps I need to find alternate online material.

Naw, its all here on the award winning Tribune!

Its just another way for the twp to gain more in tax dollars... Know one wants to build anything in this twp due to the stupid rules. This is where I would like to see state of Michigan make the rules across the state...

Ugh...I sure hope you don't play a lawyer in real life. Aside from your continual Mutilation of the English language, NO one in their right mind would want to see THE state take over decision making for the specific problems and issues we have in our local area. NO version of government works well if it gets too large...notice the problems we're having these days at the Federal level? We at least have a fighting chance at not losing more personal freedoms regarding our property and possessions if we can deal with local law makers on a somewhat level playing field. I think most real lawyers KNOW the dangers of making generalizations and for the record, you're not suppose to say stupid in this forum either.

Yes,you are right and now days town rules are difficult to people and really hard tp maintain such kind of things.I agreed with your whole opinion.
