The Lakers shot a 426 and placed sixth at Friday’s Division 3 regional meet and narrowly missed out on earning a trip to the state meet.

The top three teams earn bids to the state finals. Forest Hills Eastern was the hands-down winner with a 349, but the next several teams were all within the Lakers’ grasp.

Big Rapids was second at 420, followed by Cedar Springs (421), Tri-County (425) and Comstock Park (225).

“We had beaten Big Rapids, Tri-County and Comstock Park before,” said Lakers’ coach George Bitner, whose team had a fantastic season, going 12-0 at the varsity level and 5-0 at the JV level. In the process, the Lakers won their eighth consecutive conference championship.

At Friday’s regional event, however, Spring Lake’s youth and inexperience showed. The Lakers’ top five golfers include a junior, two sophomores and two freshmen.

“It was a learning lesson,” Bitner said. “I think that being so young, we were a little timid.”

Ginnie Olszewski led the Lakers with a round of 101. Faith Lee added a 106, as did Karissa Raschke. Emma Conroy rounded out the team’s scoring with a 113.
