GH grad Tillman stars for Albion equestrian team

Grand Haven graduate Claire Tillman had a successful debut with the Albion College hunt seat equestrian team on Oct. 7.

Helvetica;color:#006414">The former Buccaneers’ equestrian team member took first place in the advanced walk, trot, and canter during the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association event hosted by Grand Valley State University at Kentree Stables in Ada.

Helvetica;color:#006414">Albion was also victorious at the meet.

Helvetica;color:#006414">Albion’s riders braved cold and rainy conditions during their latest meet on Oct. 13 at the Western Michigan University-hosted meet in Hickory Corners, with the team taking fifth out of 13 teams at the event. Tillman and the Brittons return to competition on Nov. 3, when they’ll battle in the regional competition at the University of Michigan.

Helvetica;color:#006414">Former Spring Lake standout Brandon Zervas had a 1-yard touchdown run — his first of the season — in Hope College’s 49-14 Homecoming victory over Alma College on Saturday at Holland Municipal Stadium.

Helvetica;color:#006414">Zervas, a sophomore running back, finished the contest with eight carries for 32 yards, as the Dutch racked up an impressive 187 yards on the ground against the Scots.

Helvetica;color:#006414">With the win, Hope improves to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Helvetica;color:#006414">Freshman Matt Kroll, a Grand Haven graduate, also hauled in a 32-yard reception during the victory.

Helvetica;color:#006414">Hope travels to face Kalamazoo College this weekend.

Helvetica;color:#006414">THOMAS RUNS TO ANOTHER VICTORY Helvetica;color:#006414">

Helvetica;color:#006414">Senior Emily Thomas ran to victory at the Lewis and Clark University Invite on Saturday in Portland, Ore., adding to her sparkling resume on the trails this season.

Helvetica;color:#006414">The Pioneers won the meet thanks to the performance from the former Grand Haven standout, who completed the course in 22 minutes, 23.68 seconds.

Helvetica;color:#006414">Thomas has had a stellar start to her season, as she was also the fastest Lewis and Clark runner in the Division 3 race at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota on Sept. 29. Thomas finished 12th overall in 22:54.

Helvetica;color:#006414">At the University of Washington’s Sundodger Invitational on Sept. 17, Thomas won the Open Division, beating out a field of 213 runners on the 6K course with a time of 21:49.

Helvetica;color:#006414">MYERS SCORES FOR ST. LOUIS CROSS Helvetica;color:#006414">

Helvetica;color:#006414">Grand Haven graduate Natalie Myers scored points for the University of St. Louis cross country team at the Bradley University Classic on Friday in Peoria, Ill.

Helvetica;color:#006414">Myers finished the 6K course in 21:56, good for 32nd overall out of more than 220 runners. She was the fourth fastest finisher on her squad. As a team, the Billikens placed second overall in the 23-team field.

Helvetica;color:#006414">Myers, a sophomore, has consistently been a top-5 finisher for the Billikens in their five meets this season. They are back in action at the Atlantic 10 Championships in Philadelphia on Oct. 27.
