The sentence was part of a plea deal for Justin Donald Hobeck, 28, on the high-court misdemeanor charge of criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree.

Hobeck, of the 1500 block of Harry St., made the no contest plea on Sept. 24.

On Monday he apologized “to everyone involved in this whole situation.” He promised the judge that he would not let “this mistake” affect who he is.

Hobeck asked for a second chance “to show the person who I truly am.”

His comments did not sway Judge Jon Hulsing, who said the sentence was not a deviation of guidelines, but that it did exceed what was suggested.

He ordered Hobeck to pay $700 in fines and costs, and gave him credit for 36 days already served in jail. Hobeck must also register as a sex offender.

Hobeck’s parents, as well as other family and friends, hugged each other and cried after the sentencing.

They declined to comment.

The alleged relationship between Hobeck and the student took place in the fall of 2010 when the girl was a marching band member during her senior year. An investigation revealed that the relationship between Hobeck and the girl continued for a short time that fall, then ceased.

Grand Haven Area Public Schools Superintendent Keith Konarska said that, once alerted to the alleged relationship, the district immediately terminated its relationship with Hobeck, who was a part-time assistant for the marching band.

Hobeck is a 2002 graduate of Grand Haven High School, where he also participated in band. He had been working with the band and drum line for about five years.

To stand before the judge and say "I will not let "this mistake" affect who I am""??? This is exactly who you are!. He preys on young women and married ones...This is his character.....that does not change. I am thrilled to know he has to register as a sex offender. That is who he is. You and everyone who supports him, should be ashamed.
