Republican Roger Bergman defeated Democratic candidate Don Munski, 7,787 to 5,020, to fill the 10th District seat.

Bergman, 66, is a Grand Haven resident with experience as the city's mayor and a member of city council.

“I’m new at this, but I am ready to pitch in and do the best I can to represent Northwest Ottawa County,” he said.

Bergman emphasized the importance of providing a voice for the area, since Grand Haven is the county seat and the community has a large population base.

Bergman said the most important issues facing the community include transportation, business retention and agricultural matters.

“Being on the other side of the river has given me a different perspective,” he said. “When it comes down to it, this is Northwest Ottawa County, no matter where we are.”

Bergman also stressed that he has a lot of experience working with various levels of county government in his time serving the citizens of Grand Haven.

“I do know of what’s happening,” he said.

Bergman defeated Munski, 57, of Spring Lake. Earlier this year, Munski said he decided to run for office because the Democratic voice wasn’t being heard in the county.

On Tuesday night, Munski said he was proud of his campaign and of the support from the Northwest Ottawa County community.

Despite the loss, he’s not going to write off the local political arena.

“I will continue to be involved in local politics,” he said.
