Chair man receives angry response

A Grand Haven-area man who hung empty chairs from trees in his front lawn as a protest against President Barack Obama's candidacy has received an unwelcome post-election surprise in his driveway.

Someone placed a white outdoor chair marked with "4 more years," ''racist pig" and profanities at the end of Ken David's driveway on Wednesday. The chair's back right leg was nailed to the driveway.

David said it wasn't "nice."

David's display of empty chairs went up at the end of September. It was a play on Clint Eastwood standing on stage at the Republican National Convention berating an empty chair, representing Obama.

David lives across the street from Peach Plains Elementary School in Grand Haven Township.

An area diversity group has said David's display represents racist threats against Obama and should be taken down.

More details on the latest chair incident will be published in Thursday's Grand Haven Tribune.

Ok, I know I'm going to regret this but I'm going to do it anyhow....."You are actually stringing together more than 5 word replies" May I refer you to this topic and your astute contributions to it. http://www.grandhaventribune.com... There are also other articles where you snipe and run, but I don't want to be accused of beating a poor loser to death. Generally when I respond to a comment I try to keep it short and succinct for the benefit of the readership. I'm not always successful but that is the original intent. I've felt on more than one occasion that my replies are too wordy and cover too many issues for a single post. Most forum readers aren't going to take the time to read a rant that challenges the length of War and Peace. Many words don't equal superior intellect. "If you want to just appear smug and snarky I have better things to do" No you don't or you wouldn't be hanging out for hours and hours on a small town newspaper's forum, trying to change the world to your quixotic vision. For the record I asked for clarification in a previous post in the thread and it was you who got cute with a 5, oops 6 word reply. "You wanted obtuse" No, I wanted clarifiction. "My original post was clear and simply" Simple maybe? Your post may make sense to you, but that doesn't mean it does to the rest of the world.......some of us can think and elaborate on multiple lines of thought at the same time. I overestimated your intelligence level and assumed you could do that also. "you posted several short snarky post at that time to I suppose try to enrage the original person that posted" The original poster I responded to was you ya goofball....LOL! "I prefer to compete in the arena of ideas and facts". Sure you do.....not to mention the arena of self aggrandizement. Most people don't feel good about making up their own facts, but I guess a overwhelming feeling of superiority will do that to a person eh?. I know you'll have to get in the last word here so knock yourself out. I'm done with this thread and moving on to new frontiers.

Funny how the link Amused posted shows a post by him that is 5 words. And it is pretty evident that Wing was posting 2-3 word snippets to avoid the censors at the Trib. It seemed odd though that the time of Wings posts were not in succession. I'm hoping the Trib blog was having technical difficulties that day. Nice try though Amused

Wingmaster

Well, well. Where to begin? I think I will start by agreeing that with you that it is probably time for you to move on to new frontiers. You have exhausted any logical arguments you think you have. You are dragging other post into here, out of context, to try and make an argument. Lets just say I am less than amused. It is obvious in that post I was tweaking the Tribunes over zealous censorship. Thanks for reading through all of my post on here and I hope you learned some truths while doing so. You again want to tag me as thinking I am superior. Quite the contrary, I am here learning from all, but not agreeing. Because I state my opinions strongly at times does not make me superior, just passionate. Attacking my character does not win an argument. So enjoy your new frontiers and I hope you find something amusing!

RenegadeX

Two wrongs (if you believe the initial display was wrong), don't make a right, or am I missing something?

LessThanAmused

I think you're missing something.

RenegadeX

And what might that be (I ask in all seriousness)?

LessThanAmused

Well actually, in all seriousness, I was formulating my response when I had to head out and by the time I got back my train of thought had left the station. If I remember later what I was going for, I'll post it, otherwise, just forget I said anything.

Tri-cities realist

Probably??? So if I understand your comment, if someone makes a Constitutionally protected act of freedom of expression (regardless of intent), then they should EXPECT someone to trespass and destroy (yes a nail hole is considered destruction of property under the law) their property? Really? Is that what you are condoning? Unfrickingbelievable!

LessThanAmused

One word? You fixate on one word and then launch into some bug-eyed, drooling, xanax induced rant about freedom of expression? Holy moly you're gonna have a stroke if you don't calm down. I'm not condoning anything, Obviously from your lunatic fringe response you don't understand what you read. I simply suggested that if you make yourself a target there's a chance someone may take a shot at you. A pretty simple concept that even someone with a mindset like you have should be able to comprehend. I know it's been rough for you these last couple days, but that's no reason to go off the deep end. The sun will come up again tomorrow, I promise.

Tri-cities realist

I did not fixate on one word, but rather looked at the entirety of your post hoping to find some sarcasm or other indication that you were not condoning illegal behavior. But you didn't condemn it either, which I think speaks volumes. As for lunatic fringe, having a stroke, and "bug-eyed, drooling, xanax induced rant", I will let our words speak for themselves, and let others here judge who exemplifies those words. I am actually quite calm and I fully comprehend the simple concept, I just thought you might be able to agree that we all should condemn such illegal activity. If someone wanted to make a statement by placing this chair in their own yard, I would have congratulated them on their creativity. I have no problem condemning illegal behavior, but that is apparently where we disagree yet again, and now I'm some sort of lunatic fringe. Makes perfect sense these days.

dyankee

Ken, donate that chair to the New Black Panthers Party....I'm sure they could use it in their breakroom. You may just go National yet!

dyankee

Apparently, it is not easy being cheese...y

SrqDude

Are this guy's chairs still hanging? This time the article says he hanged the chairs as, "a protest against President Barack Obama's candidacy" but I thought he just liked to hang chairs as art? Will someone help me, did it come out somewhere that this dude was actually hanging chairs to represent President Obama or is it just generally accepted reasoning, albeit against his own admission, for hanging chairs in trees?

Tri-cities realist

This article is from the AP, so believe what it says at your own risk. You have been warned.

The retaliation from the left is nauseating... the bully mob mentality never accomplished anything. So much for anti bullying and before someone says it.. what he did probably was not right, but that does not mean its okay to do it too!

Captain Obvious

It's amusing listening to what I assume are mostly old white folks talking about racism. What would they know? Why don't some of the .45% or 50 Black people in Grand Haven speak up and say what they think? (That seems like more than I've ever seen but Wiki the GH Census)

Vladtheimp

Captain Oblivious: That is one of the dumber comments I have read in a while- what do old white people know about racism? Have you ever heard of the racism of Nazi Germany? Who do you think fought and died to erase that - old white people. Who do you think marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma- old white people. Who do you think passed the Civil Rights laws in the 1960's? That's right - old white people, and old white republicans in particular. I guess it's o.k. to disparage, slander, bully, and discriminate as long as the objects of your affection are Christians and old white people. Learn some history.

Tri-cities realist

Zing... Vlad strikes again.

Wingmaster

"Old white people" are the new buzz words on the left. That's quite Obvious...Captain! I read all blogs too.

ADDENDUM: Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern

..and thank you for keeping us safe from the tyranny in the world. Unfortunately now, the enemy is from within.

I am African American. I do not see any racism and am not offended in the "hanging" chairs with "rope." I do find it odd, singular and strange behavior. “Anger is only a natural reaction; one of the mind's ways of reacting to things that it percieves to be wrong. While anger can sometimes lead people to do shocking things,it can also be an instinct to show people that something isn't quite right.”

MR. WILLIAMS

I live right here in Ottawa County, the "Reddest County" of all counties in all 50 States in the past two national elections according to voting statistics. In Grand Haven I know plenty of white people who will proudly boast that they know one or two Black people which seem to be nice people inferring that they aren't racists. I've been keeping tabs on Ken David who from day one denies being a "Racist," that it's just a big coincidence that he happened to "hang his red lawn chairs" from his front yard trees across from Peach Plains Elementary School right after the Republican National Convention where speaker Clint Eastwood had his talk with an invisible President Obama sitting in an empty chair and claim's they're just "Decorations," sure they are, decorations that David by happenstance hung after Eastwood had his conversation with his empty chair. The day after Barack Obama was reelected a 2nd 4 year term as President, Ken and Judy David were given an “Empty Law Chair” surprise of a White Plastic Lawn Chair nailed down to his driveway, complete with written Black Magic Marker words and symbols on the chair, with David saying, “it wasn’t nice.” Well Mr. David, how nice was it of you to hang your Empty Red Lawn Chairs from your front yard trees for all to see including the young impressionable minds of the Peach Plains Elementary School children?

Vladtheimp

Maybe you should be keeping tabs, not on Mr. David, but on folks in Ottawa County, the "Reddest of all counties" who believe that it is somehow appropriate to trespass on private property and leave a white lawn chair adorned with profane and racist remarks in full view of the young impressionable minds of the Peach Plains Elementary School Children . . . . Bye the bye, if you are searching for an "Empty Law Chair" you might want to research how your hero became the President of the Harvard Law Review without ever publishing an article in the review - that's unheard of. Since you seem to be such a scholar, maybe your should keep tabs on what folks are doing in the bluest of all counties - like Flint, Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago. I'd love to hear the results of your inclusive research!
