Nooks and Crannies is a family affair

The term "family business' spreads four-fold at the Nooks and Crannies antique store in Grand Haven.

Matriarch June Peterson; her daughter, Teresa Brolick; and granddaughter, Nicole Porter, split hours at the store that specializes in antiques, dried arrangements and gifts. Nicole's children, Bianca, 4, and Gavin, 10 months, often hang out at the family's gift shop, too.

“Mom and I own it together,” said Teresa, 53. “It was one of those 'in-the-middle-of-the-night things' that come to you. We both had a lot of antiques that we acquired over the years.”

When Teresa's grandmother died in February, the family's personal inventory grew.

The family happened to own the storefront at 328 Jackson St., as they once owned and operated the Flower Connection there. They leased the building out in recent years.

Teresa and June were planning to sell their antiques at local antique store booths when it dawned on Teresa that they could open their own shop at the Jackson Street site.

“We thought, 'What a perfect place to put it,'” Teresa said. “Why lay money out for a booth when we have this building sitting there. We were going to start off small and not get too crazy, and then it just evolved. We had more stuff than we thought.”

There is so much "stuff" that plans for consignment sales are on hold until they clear space for it.

“We're filled up right now,” Teresa said. “This isn't your average antique booth selection — it is more of an upscale antique store. We don't want it to be filled with a bunch of junk. We wanted to fill the space with nice things.”

Nooks and Crannies also offers silk scarves, French linens, silk and dried flowers, candles, and potpourri.
