Empty cupboards

The Mother Hubbard-like shelves of a local food pantry are no longer just part of an old nursery rhyme. The stark reality is that the shelves at the local Love INC food pantry are mostly empty.

The Christian agency's leaders don't want their clients' stomachs to follow suit.

Love INC Operations Director Jeanette Laarman said supplies and donations are the lowest in the 10 years she's worked at the nonprofit organization's food pantry.

“The demand and the need for food is up, and the donations are down,” she said.

Love INC supplies eight area food pantries and serves 30 families a week, but there's simply not enough to go around, Laarman said. Although no one has been turned away yet, they're distributing less.

Even with strategic meal planning, it's difficult to stretch supplies out for seven days.

“We have to downsize amounts and try to be creative,” Laarman said. “We try to spread it out the best we can. It's scary in the sense that I don't know how we're going to get through this, but I know God has a plan.”

The Meijer store in Grand Haven Township is helping out today and Saturday. Donation cards are available at the store's checkout lanes. If you donate $10 to the pantry, Meijer will kick in $20.

Love INC Executive Director Mark Green said it's an “amazing opportunity” to reverse the rationing.

“It's not too often you can triple your money,” Green said. “We're optimistic. We have a very generous community.”

Eric Morgan, president and CEO of Love INC, described the pantry as “decimated.”

Donations of nonperishable food items or turkeys may be dropped off at Love INC, 1106 Fulton Ave. in Grand Haven, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays (until 8 p.m. Thursdays), and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
