OUR VIEWS: GH teachers set an example

Nov 15, 2012

The new contract calls for health insurance concessions and a salary freeze the first year. Union members were willing to accept these concessions to support students and their families in our community.

This is one more piece of evidence that explains why the Grand Haven school district is one of the finest in the country. It’s called dedication — and if this latest action doesn’t prove to the community how dedicated the teachers are in Grand Haven, then nothing ever will.

To make these kinds of sacrifices so the impact of our public schools' financial situation is not felt by students is truly admirable.

It’s been a difficult few years. While some segments of our economy are showing signs of improvement, the funding of our public school system is not one of them.

Many businesses over the years have had to make drastic concessions and changes to their organizations in order to keep their doors open. It’s encouraging to know that the teachers have recognized that schools are no different, and have done their part to help save money and make things better.

The next time you have the opportunity to speak to a Grand Haven Area Public Schools teacher, thank them for their dedication to their students, and let them
know how proud you are to be a part of such a caring community.

As districts across the state continue to struggle to balance their budgets, we can only hope that they use Grand Haven as an example of one that is doing it right and they follow our lead.
