Local athletes finalize college futures

Before she was recruited by schools across the country to play college volleyball, Grand Haven senior Abby Cole always had a bond to the University of Michigan.

Her grandfather, Dr. Dave Cole, taught mechanical engineering at the school for 30 years, and would often take Cole’s father, Scott, to athletic events and other university functions throughout his childhood.

That family bond to U-M may be even tighter now after Abby signed her national-letter-of-intent to play volleyball for the Wolverines next fall.

Sitting next to Scott, and her mother, Dawn, Cole signed the necessary paperwork to become a Wolverine inside Grand Haven head coach Aaron Smaka’s classroom at Grand Haven High School, along with the rest of the Bucs’ coaching staff, numerous teammates and fellow classmates during a signing ceremony.

Cole will become Grand Haven’s second player on a Division 1 roster, joining 2011 graduate Mindy Marx, who is a sophomore at Ball State University.

The normally reserved Cole blushed at times from all the attention thrust her way on Wednesday, and when classmates demanded that she make a speech, she simply just thanked them for showing her support.

She’s been much more boisterous on the court during the past several weeks, as she’s led the Bucs to an inspired run to Friday’s Class A state semifinals at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, where they’ll face Temperance Bedford. It is Grand Haven’s first-ever appearance in the semifinals, while Bedford has won three Class A state titles, its last coming in 2005.

Good Luck to Abby Cole! GH Trib - Who is the mystery person who had their head cut off? Also, the title mentioned "Athletes"....who are the others?

I fixed the photo cropping. That's Adam Poel.

By the way, the photos can be seen fully by moving your cursor into the photo box and clicking it. That also brings up the photo caption.

Hence the tag at the bottom "To read more of this story, see today's print or e-edition of the Grand Haven Tribune." aka actually buy the newspaper.
