David E. Sparks

David Eugene Sparks, 73, of Greer, S.C., and formerly of Grand Haven, died Thursday, May 2, 2013.

He was a recipient of the Gold Life Savings Medal for his heroic rescue attempt off the Grand Haven south pier in 1961.

Arrangements by the Stribling Funeral Home of Duncan, S.C.

Dave was BM2 David Sparks,USCGS Woodbine, stationed at Grand Haven and one of the last to man the signal house at the end of the South Pier in 1961. One very stormy day he dove into 12 foot waves to try and save a Spring Lake boy washed off the pier, for which he was awarded the Gold Life Saving Medal.

Thousands of Havenites streamed out to the harbor to see him awarded that prestigious medal by the Admiral of the US Coast Guard and the people of the city honored him for the remainder of his stay here.

However, as the years passed, he was forgotten by most until a pier victim/hero monument stone was dedicated to him in 1996. Thereafter, he returned to Grand Haven for Coast Guard Festival every year and became known to Grand Haven once again!

We must always remember our heroes!

G'bye Dave
