Curbing gun violence

To the Editor: We too have become part of the national debate about curbing gun violence. One could not help but notice that the city of Newtown, in many ways, resembles the Tri-Cities.
Jan 28, 2013

Each state has its own gun laws, and state and local governments have police powers to make laws necessary for the health, safety and welfare of their community.

Within the Grand Haven City Charter and Code of Ordinances is listed “Offenses against Persons” and “Offenses against the Public Peace," with firearms described this way: “Dangerous weapon means any weapon likely to produce or capable of producing death or great bodily injury; or any weapon which because of the manner in which it is used, or attempted to be used, endangers life or inflicts bodily harm." If interested in more detail, look up Article V, Section 24-55.

We assume that these ordinances aim to protect law-abiding citizens. However, it’s possible not all ordinances are up to date and/or precise.

Nevertheless, we would like everyone to be informed about Grand Haven’s gun laws, gun ownership/use and the local businesses that sell guns. Our purpose is not to get caught up in the interpretation of the Second Amendment, defining the characteristics of mental illness and assault weapons. Our intent is to have public safety and a fair gun policy.

Maybe the people of the Tri-Cities will want to discuss limiting military-style weapons made for mass killings, high-capacity ammunition clips, and expand universal background checks on firearm purchases. Possibly all of us can become involved with sensible and responsible solutions.

Really??

"Maybe the people of the Tri-Cities will want to discuss limiting military-style weapons made for mass killings"

Ahhh, colt and other manufactures specifically design these for mass killings?
lol Its sad when the people that the public turn to for news are under educated, lairs and push opinions on the public to deceive them.

Keep you biased, uninformed, and blatant leis (sorry opinions) to yourself and report on the news.

Justsaying

Barb and Kevin Rowe, I applaud your desire to stop violence in our schools and streets. But, I would remind you that Connecticut has more laws and ordinances than almost any state in our Union. Laws don't stop those with mental health issues from their destructive behaviors. All the laws that the President is proposing would not have stopped Newtown. Please think!! We all want less violence. Chicago has the some of the most restrictive and toughest gun laws in the country and the highest gun violence and murders. Please think!!! Why do you think restricting guns from law abiding citizens will somehow stop gun violence? Please think before you write!!

Well said.

Dear Rowe's

Do you realize the mechanics (action) of a so called assault rifle A.K.A "AR" is exactly the same as a deer hunting rifle? It's only the cover "stock, housing" etc. that makes it look intimidating. A 30-06 and many others offer models in the semi-automatic class - the very same as any "AR" rifles. Fully automatic fire arms are illegal and have been for a very long time. So I ask you - if someone uses their camo painted car to run over people intentionally, should we opt to limit or ban camo vehicles because they look military and kill people? Guns are not the problem! You should feel safe knowing that people are carrying consealed firearms all around you to protect themselves and others should a life threatening situation happen to take place.

Back to the Wall

I applaud your motivation, Karl and Barb. Go ahead and get together and talk all you want. I suggest a roundtable discussion of the crime reduction effectiveness of the 1994 "Assault" Weapons ban. It's your inalienable right as citizens of the United States of America to assemble and discuss the legislative process.

Do you see the irony yet?
No?
Okay, I'll continue.

There are other rights that have been spelled out for we citizens. Inalienable rights. You know what "Inalienable" means, right Barb? After all, you are a retired teacher. "Inalienable" in this context means the rights cannot be taken away.

The constitution is a mulch-faceted document. Karl, that means it has many faces, or parts, which are called articles and amendments. We do not get to pick and choose which parts we want to follow. Part of the same Constitution that protects your right to assemble has a section about providing for common defense, and calling forth a standing militia of able bodied men, and that the right to this "shall not be infringed".

Karl and Barb, what part of "Shall not be infringed" is hard for you to understand?

Now that your emotional episode has been addressed, I'm going to throw you a bone (heh-heh). Many gun control opponents may not approve, but Barb, Karl, you sound like well-meaning people, if only a little naive or simple.

Your reference to local municipal laws is quaint, but unfortunately you need to bark up a bigger tree if you want your "meetings" to be more than a kumbaya coffee klatsch.

You see, Karl and Barb, there is another Constitution, not so well known, but subject to, and more easily amended than the big one. It's the Constitution of the State of Michigan. Michigan has a firearms preemption law that prevents county and municipal governments from enacting gun laws that are stricter than state law. - MCL Chapter 123, Act 319 of 1990, Section 123.1102.

So, before spending too much of the precious little time we have left here, perhaps you'd best get your facts straight.

NSViews

As for getting the facts straight, our unalienable rights are mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution. These are two very important, yet quite different, documents written for different purposes.

Also, nowhere in the Constitution will you find the phrase able bodied men.

The AR-15 is great little weapon for home defense. It's handy, light weight, easy to operate, and very accurate. I realize that there haven't been any home invasions in Ottawa County over the past 20 years or so, so I guess I must be a criminal for owning one. I did get a speeding ticket in 1987 though. Hey Babs and Karl, you're not calling me a criminal are you?

By the way Rowes, that is a nice looking Sig Sauer you have there, how do you like it? Does that assualt pistol belong to Babs or Karl?

People need to remember that assault weapons were banned (for most people) in 1934. What Feinstein wants to ban are SEMI-auto rifles that are used for self-defense, varmint hunting, and on the AR-10 frame deer hunting. Nothing in their operation is different than the Remington 742 or Winchester 100 that have been around for 50+ years. She just does not like the looks of them. All of use that have worked around crooks know that the crooks will not register their stolen weapons. Why is it that the Feds will not let the states enforce the immigration laws but demands that the states enforce federal gun laws?

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Lets fix what is broken! The idiot politicians just want to take advantage of this tragedy to push an anti gun agenda. Pay attention people, your rights as American citizens are under attack. The above post is exactly correct, there is no difference between the actions of common deer hunting rifles and shotguns from an AR-10.

You would think they would write articles supporting what there readers want....... Probably would lose there funding though so they keep pushing the lies and BS

It's not "Gun Violence" that is the problem. It's just "Violence"! humans have been violent since the beginning of time. We will continue to be violent. We used to kill each other with stones and clubs. Criminals (and humanity in general) will continue to kill each other even if the only tools availabe are spoons. It is absolute lunacy to believe that outlawing anything will somehow change the world. If outlawing guns will really get them off the streets then maybe we should outlaw heroin, prostitution and drunk driving too!

Necktie

You are both educated people. Didn’t you pay attention in history class? The Pilgrims came here to escape oppression. The American Revolution was fought to throw off tyranny. And government genocide has been commonplace throughout history.

Look at this partial list of government genocide committed in the 20th Century alone.

1915-17...............Turkey.............1.5 million murdered by their government
1929-45...............Soviet Union.....20 million murdered by their government
1933-45...............Germany...........20 million murdered by their government
1927-76...............China................45 million murdered by their government
1960-81...............Guatemala........200,000 murdered by their government
1971-79...............Uganda.............300,000 murdered by their government
1975-79...............Cambodia..........2 million murdered by their government
1994.....................Rwanda.............800,000 murdered by their government

You can ignore history and human nature, but the fact remains that government is responsible for more murders of innocent men, women, and children throughout history than all other factors combined. And when decent, honest individuals are prevented from having adequate weapons to stand in defense of freedom and against tyrannical government when it occurs…you can rest assured oppression and genocide are not far behind.
