I don’t believe that our country’s problems are necessarily Republican or Democrat. They are a lack of leadership. We have known for decades that the Social Security and Medicare programs were under funded. None of our representatives in Congress wanted to tackle the problem. We just kept going down the same road of over spending and under taxing until we have the current crisis.
Let me put forth a different point of view for discussion. We are 15 months away from our next national election, and already the process is in full swing. The Obama campaign has estimated that they will raise and spend a billion dollars in their effort to become re-elected. So my theory is that our problem is the election process. To run for Congress, candidates must raise scandalous amounts of money, many donators expect something in return for their donations, and the payoff is a clause in the tax code that gives them a deduction for them or their company.
Our tax code has multi-thousands of pages, and if you would examine it closely you would probably find most of those pages arrived on the tax code, not on their own merit or even voted on, but were amendments to unrelated bills. I believe throwing out the entire mess and starting over with a simple form would go a long way toward solving our problems. It would make filing taxes much more simple and fair. We might even balance the budget.
